The cars used by Google for its Street View service sought more information than initially supported by Google. The search giant apologizes.
In the company blog, Google admits on Friday 22 October have collected information on private wireless networks in the U.S. and Europe from its Street View cars.
Google came under investigation last May, when it was discovered that the cars not only photographing streets and places of interest, but also captured and recorded signals from wireless networks that were on their journey.
On the occasion, Google admitted the mistake, noting that it had been a bug in the software designed to gather information. Also stated that it was just “pieces of information” as the IP addresses of private networks.
However, internal and external investigations revealed that Google even detected and stored passwords for different online services, and that this procedure would have been started in 2007.
On October 22, Google admitted that in some cases complete stored email messages, Web addresses and passwords of particular networks.
“Although investigations (internal and external) revealed that in most cases the information was fragmented, also captured occasionally complete email messages and URLs, in addition to passwords.”
Then, Google writes, “We delete this information as soon as possible and would like to apologize again for having obtained such information. Overwhelms us what happened, but we trust that the installed changes to our processes and structure will significantly improve our internal privacy and security practices for the benefit of all our users. “
With this, Google refers to three major changes, including hiring new personnel, internal training about privacy issues and new procedures to comply with its own code of conduct.
