Just a few decades, things that we normally used today were real luxuries: a bathroom, car, even running water. We had a prodigious increase in living standards, which in Spain has its start in the 60′s and has a sprint in the 90′s. There are luxuries of the second generation, who have filled our homes, plasma TVs and computers, mobile phones, air conditioning. Even a considerable number of people access to what we ere before heritage of a tiny minority: the holidays, the second holiday home.
However, as life is always a compensation whimsical game, there are new luxuries that are available to few and are difficult to achieve, even with money.
The first of these luxuries is silence. It is increasingly difficult to enjoy a little quiet, for example, to chat. Any bar or public place has its background music or television, usually no one looks, at full volume. In the street, the car noise is added to the musical equipment of the cars, which become small and mobile discos blaring. Even in banks and waiting rooms of doctors, is installed as an omnipresent music.
The other luxury is loneliness. Our entertainment usually consists of getting into massive crowds in long lines and save to dive into the great masses of people. It is increasingly difficult to establish a territory in which to enjoy some peace. That is why looking for places far richer (and expensive) to live.
In addition, the last and most important luxury of XXI century is something that apparently is not exhausted either costs money: time. Nobody has time for anything. Lunatics seem to run a race with no destination in sight lost in an unknown goal. When technology does so much work for us, it would seem logical that we had more free time. Not so. Live slave clock and calendar and push our daily work with the desperate effort to Sisyphus pushing his stone.
