Carpooling is the practice of a group of people all riding in the same vehicle for regular commutes in which they all share. Sometimes these commutes are all to the same location such as a particular job and in other cases they may to places located near each other. This can be arranged between friends or associates of various sorts or even among people who have not known each other previously. Carpooling is a great way to cooperate to save money, which is increasingly important in these economically troubled times. The following are some of the ways in which people save by using carpooling:
Gasoline
One of the most obvious ways that carpooling economizes on funds is by saving on the amount of gasoline an individual needs to buy in order to commute. The general practice is for everyone riding in the car to pay for part of the gasoline. This can amount to really substantial savings for all involved. Consider, for instance, a car with four passengers as opposed to one. Their total gas costs for commuting are reduced to a quarter of what they would have spent if driving alone. Whereas they might spend $200 a month on gas if they were driving alone, with carpooling they would only spend $50. If they were to add a few more passengers, the cost would go down still further.
One tip for gassing up is to use one specific credit card — such as my favorite, the Chase Freedom Visa card — to handle all the fuel costs. Then when the statement comes gas costs can be split between the carpoolers. This card offers gasoline incentives and discounts that can add up over time to big savings.
Routine Maintenance
Another way that carpooling saves money is by reducing the cost of routine auto maintenance, which the passengers can also share. Things like changing the oil, replacing tires, putting on new windshield wiper blades, getting a tune up, and similar maintenance work can all be split among the passengers. So again these costs, which can mount annually up to fairly high levels, will go down substantially in a carpool situation. Most people will be happy to chip in for the cost of this type of routine work in exchange for the savings and convenience of the carpooling experience.
Auto Repairs
Finally we come to auto repairs. If everyone in the carpool takes turns driving their own vehicles, the mileage and repairs required for each vehicle will be reduced because they will be driven less frequently. This can save each member of the carpool quite a lot of money each year.
The final advantage to carpooling that deserves mentioning is that it helps the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road. Though this may not be an advantage based financial savings, it is worthy in its own right and helps protect the planet for future generations. When added to the monetary benefits of carpooling, this makes a very strong case for people of all walks of life incorporating carpooling into their daily transportation experience.
